Proposed Merger Update |

Distinguished Alumni Award |
Last year Geoff Allen AM (MBA 1969) was given the MBS Distinguished Alumni Award.  Here, he talks about what it means to be recognised by his alumni peers

My grandson, having heard a story about a wise old owl told me his great grandfather (my father-in-law) "was so old he must know a hundred things".  I asked him how many he thought I knew and he answered "You must know about sixteen things!"

Well, if I know sixteen things, at least one of them must be how important my MBA experience, and my continued association with the Melbourne Business School, has been to me.  Read more.

Taking a punt on MBA talent |
As a follow-up to last month’s article by Ed Cook (What does Australia know about the MBA?), MBS Careers Consultant, Leo Grogan believes graduate job-seekers have the ability to confront potential MBA ambivalence in the job market, even in today’s testing hiring conditions

For many of this year’s graduates, the winter job search campaign has been a particularly cold one.  Everyone is feeling a little battle weary, with sword edges dulled and body armour dented.

In speaking with students, alumni and recruiters, it’s clear that this year’s job market indicators should have come with a severe weather warning. The big picture outlook for a number of MBA hiring sectors has been bleak.  Headcount freezes have limited the range of attractive roles.  Read more.

Climbing the management ladder |
Jennifer Moltisanti (MBA 1998) on protecting our borders, facilitating trade and assisting the community, all the while climbing the management ladder

I began my professional career in Customs (now Australian Customs and Border Protection) in the 'nineties.  It was an era of change for the public sector – graduates were being actively engaged, computers appeared on everyone’s desk and the way in which we did business was changed forever. Read more.

Newspapers' pain presents opportunities for marketers |
MediaCom’s Strategy Director, Philip Phelan, didn’t mince words when he pronounced the cause of the newspaper's  deteriorating health at the MBS Marketing Association’s event 'Who Killed the Newspaper?' this month

"Elitism, atrophy, complacence and a resistance to new ideas".
But although dire, the printed newspaper as a medium is not dead yet, and the situation may in fact be beneficial to marketers. Across the globe, newspapers are failing, and soon LA, Boston, San Francisco or Miami will be the first major US city without a daily newspaper.  Read more.

Will alumni recovery parallel better economic times? |
MBS alumnus David Paynter (MBA 1997) looks at how a local approach to alumni relations is welcoming better days for MBS graduates in London

A drawn-out recession, unclear direction, too many chiefs at the head-table, and a lack of engagement.  It’s little wonder that our alumni chapter has fallen on difficult times of late.

As the President of the London Alumni of Melbourne Business School (LAMBS), I know that 2009 has been a challenging year for Melbourne alumni based in the UK – indeed the story has often been the same around the world.  For the London chapter, 2009 has also represented a new start in rebuilding an important global outpost for the School.  This is why I’d like to share our region’s story of how we’re underpinning a stronger support base for the School, its alumni, staff and students.  Read more.

Personal Wealth Management (second) Series |
The best thing about the series was ... Understanding the facets of wealth management as being a lot broader than I originally expected. It has prepared me better to navigate what is quite a complex area.  Participant, first series – July & August 2009

After the sell-out success of the first personal wealth management series, MBS is pleased to again offer alumni the opportunity to take part in an unique four-part breakfast series, where you will discover how to optimise your own wealth management strategy in an intimate learning environment.  More information and registration.
