Do C students make the best CEOs? |
Robert Wood, Professor of Management (Organisational Behaviour)

I first saw the quote “C Students Make the Best CEOs” on the t-shirt of a Kellogg MBA student during the recruiting period while I was a visiting Professor at the School. Unfortunately, I never got to speak to the student, but I thought it was an interesting hypothesis and would have liked to hear the explanations he offered to the hard-nosed recruiters from Chicago, Silicon Valley and Wall Street – if he got an interview.

However, the slogan did get me thinking about what a C student might have learnt from his or her experience and how could that prepare them for a CEO role?  Read more

Public Lecture: Putting business and ethics together once and for all |
Gourlay Visiting Professor of Ethics in Business - Professor R Edward Freeman

Recent years have been marked by unprecedented changes in society and in business and the old models, frameworks, and theories don’t work very well in this new environment.

We seem to be caught in a continuous cycle of crisis, over response, crisis. We have been enacting a bad story about business and capitalism for some time. It’s one that is no longer useful.  Read more

The great tradition: Great ideas that have changed the world |
Series of 8 lectures and discussions at The National Gallery of Victoria

How do today’s habits of mind in economics, commerce and politics compare with the most ambitious ideas from the past? What are the ambitions that a society gives itself and where do those ambitions come from? What does society regard as important? And why? And how do we understand where we are in the epic story of history?

These and other questions form the central theme to a series of talks being held by Melbourne Business School Philosopher in Residence, John Armstrong at the National Gallery of Victoria during October, November and December.  Read more

Pursuing an internship with the MBS Social Sector program |
Julie Gelman, Industry Consultant: Not For Profit, Government, Biotech, Pharma, SME, talks through the realities of the social sector

When considering an internship in the social sector, MBA students often ask me:

* How will it look to recruiters during my second year?
* Does it matter if I make less money than most of those people who get internships in the for profit world?
* Will I really be able to use and sharpen my business skills in a social sector internship?
* Will I receive any training, mentorship or other benefits associated with traditional MBA internship programs?  Read more
